App-ads.txt Industry Dashboard

The App-ads.txt Industry Dashboard delivers an updated-daily industry overview and analysis of the app-ads.txt initiative adoption by the top apps in both the iOS's App Store and the Android's Google Play marketplaces.

With the App-ads.txt Industry Dashboard, industry stakeholders are able to:

  • Easily see adoption rates by app publishers in different market tiers and geographies
  • Learn about common implementation errors
  • Review statistics on seller relationships, including ratio of authorized direct vs. reseller records
  • See trends regarding the usage of popular and emerging advertising systems

The App-ads.txt Industry Dashboard is the second in a series of free industry-focused tools developed by FirstImpression.io Labs. The first tool released by FirstImpression.io Labs was the Ads.txt Industry Dashboard which provides in depth adoption data on the ads.txt standard, which inspired the creation of the app-ads.txt standard.

                              Methodology

                            • Overall and country level adoption - we try to retrieve the top 1,000 apps, free and paid, in the top 40 countries (generally the ones that have meaningful advertising budgets) on the 1st day of every month. The apps retrieved will be checked for adoption of app-ads.txt on a daily basis. Except for the category level adoption calculations, the data gathered from these apps is used for all the different graphs. In some cases, less than 1,000 apps are provided by the app store for a given country and cost category combination, in which case we utilize all the provided apps.
                            • Category level adoption - we try to retrieve the top 1,000 apps, free and paid, in the USA in every top category for both App Store and Google Play on the 1st day of every month. The apps retrieved will be checked for adoption of app-ads.txt on a daily basis. In some cases, less than 1,000 apps are provided by the app store for a given category and cost category combination, in which case we utilize all the provided apps. Categories marked with an asterisk (*) have less than 100 apps in them and thus have bigger fluctuations.
                            • Interpretation of developer URL - App-ads.txt 1.0 specifications mention 3 different meta tags that app stores should adopt to make the crawling of App-ads.txt easier and unified. Among others, the meta tag "appstore:developer_url" should be added to the app's page, specifying the app developer’s website URL where an app-ads.txt may be found. At the time we released this dashboard, Apple didn't adopt the app-ads.txt guidelines and doesn't include the needed meta tag. As we think that Apple App Store is an important store to consider when evaluating app-ads.txt adoption, we decided to crawl the URL specified in the "Developer Website" link on the app's App Store page as an alternative. Once Apple will adopt the guidelines and add the meta tag we'll start crawling the apps based on the tag's data.
